Universal EM-MWD
Space-Grade Software-Defined Radio for the Oil and Gas Industry
About
Universal EM-MWD is a next-generation electromagnetic Measurement-While-Drilling modem designed for high-performance telemetry in the oil and gas industry. Our space-grade software-defined radio technology delivers exceptional noise immunity, deep drilling range, and advanced signal processing capabilities for both downhole and surface systems.

What we do
  • Custom-built space-grade software-defined radios (transmitter / receiver) for EM-MWD telemetry
  • Consulting in the field of Signal Processing and wireless modem design and architecture
Our products
Universal EM-MWD Modem
(Transmitter / Receiver for both Downhole and Surface)

  • Unrivaled in noise suppression and channel distortion elimination: Outperforms the leading competitors by over 5 dB, which is equivalent to being able to drill more than three times deeper
  • Highly customizable as per customer's specifications
  • Two-way communication
  • Modulation formats currently supported: PSK (BPSK / QPSK), MSK / CPFSK (many more are coming soon)

  • Carrier frequencies supported: All in the range of 1–20 Hz (1, 2, 3, ... , 20 Hz)
  • Baud rates supported: Entire range of 1–20 bps (1, 2, 3, ... , 20 bps)✶
  • Frame size: Unlimited
  • Error Correction Coding: Convolutional, currently supported (7,5), (15,17), (31,33), (371,247), code rates ⅔, ¾, ⅘, ⅞, or any existing (encoded is the entire frame, not just the payload, which makes the modem even more resilient to noise and channel distortion)
  • Multiple-antenna layout for better noise suppression: currently 2 (expandable to any number, limited by hardware)
  • Coherent adaptive carrier synchronization by a PLL
  • Adaptive timing synchronization
  • Extremely fast and noise-resilient adaptive equalizer
  • ECC Decoding: Convolutional with Soft Output
  • Programming language: C (currently fixed-point), MATLAB©
  • DSP Platform: currently TI C5505, OMAP-L138 / C6748 (portable to any other)

✶ Because of the bandwidth requirements, rates larger than their carrier frequencies could be subpar and may not be recommended, i.e., F1R7, F8R12, F17R20, etc.
The Performance of the Universal EM-MWD Modem in the Presence of Noise

The BER curves of our Modem demonstrate the clear advantage over the competition. the Modem provides more than 8.5 dB improvement over an uncoded BPSK/MSK and 1.1 dB over MATLAB simulation for a coded coherent MSK receiver.

Performance of the Modem in the Presence of Noise and Channel Distortion

Universal EM-MWD Modem is capable of decoding signals even in the most distortive and noisy environments.

Transmission rate shown:
  • Fc = 9 Hz / R = 9 bps
Performance under most ideal conditions

Demonstration of the performance of the modem under most ideal conditions: when there is no noise and no channel distortion.
Three example transmission rates are shown:
  • Fc = 20 Hz / R = 20 bps,
  • Fc = 13 Hz / R = 8 bps, and
  • Fc = 8 Hz / R = 7 bps.
Performance of the Modem in the Presence of Noise and Channel Distortion

Universal EM-MWD Modem is capable of decoding signals even in the most distortive and noisy environments.
Two example transmission rates are shown:
  • Fc = 9 Hz / R = 9 bps and
  • Fc = 19 Hz / R = 17 bps.
Performance of the Modem with SNR ≈ –2 dB

See how the Universal EM-MWD Modem flawlessly performs in the presence of SNR ≈ –2
dB (that’s 2 dBs more noise than signal!) and severe channel distortion!
